Alumnus Is

Alumnus is a latin word meaning a male graduate or former student of a school, college, or university.

An alumnus or an alumna (almna feminine) of a college, university, or other school is a former student who has either attended or graduated in some fashion from the institution. The plural is alumni almni for men and mixed groups and alumnae almnae for women.

Unlike alumni, which can refer to a group of male graduates or to a mixed-gender group, alumnus is usually reserved for the boys. At least, if youre a stickler for using ancient latin in modern english.

The term is not synonymous with graduate one can be an alumnus without graduating (burt reynolds, alumnus but not graduate of florida state, is an example). The term is sometimes used to refer to a former employee or member of an organization, contributor, or inmate.
